Library History

Read how this library was established and how it has evolved to become such an important part of our community.

The Atkins Public Library Board held there first meeting on May 28, 1974.  The five member board was appointed by Mayor Ben Kreutner.  When the Board was appointed they did not have a site to start the library, so that was  there first priority.  The two places they considered were the bank basement and the basement of the new Atkins Telephone Office. A city code resolution was voted on on November 20, 1974.  The basement of the telephone company was decided upon and the library resided there for fifteen years.  The library then moved across the street to the old West Side building where it still resides.  In March of 2007 a committee was formed into looking into building a new library/city hall.
